The Spanish church established five Catholic missions along the San Antonio River in the 18th century, primarily to extend its dominion northward from Mexico, but also to convert the native population. These missions are the largest concentration of missions in North America and provides an interesting look into Texas’ history.
The Alamo
The first mission established in San Antonio was the Alamo and served as a way station between east Texas and Mexico. Already 100 years old when it fell in the notorious Battle of the Alamo, you’ll find it in the heart of the city. It’s the most photographed church or mission in Texas and serves as a rallying cry in Texas history… “Remember the Alamo”.
Mission Concepción
Mission Concepción is the most beautiful mission church. Mission Concepción looks the same as it did in 1731. The mission is the oldest un-restored church in America. While its exterior paintings have faded, guests can view conserved interior remnants of wall and ceiling paintings as the interior has been restored.
Mission San José
The San José, established in 1720, was a model for other missions--and the most prosperous. This “Queen of the Missions” was the social and cultural center with its 300 residents sustaining themselves by raising livestock and farming vast fields. The mission also had its own gristmill and granary, which have been restored.
Mission San Juan
The San Juan’s fertile farmlands allowed its inhabitants to be self sustaining, and its surplus helped supply the region with produce. Note the typical Romanesque archway at the entrance gate and the remains of a half-completed, more elaborate church. The chapel and bell tower are still in use.
Mission Espada
Mission Espada contains the best-preserved segment of the acequia (irrigation system) that was used to bring water to the fields. Today, part of the acequia operates the Espada aqueduct and dam.
